The State Department again lured Ukraine with the specter of NATO membership
If Ukraine wishes and will fulfill all obligations to join NATO, the United States will in no way interfere with this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Wess Mitchell stated this in an interview with Ekho Moskvy.
“This issue was discussed at the recent NATO summit. And we once again confirmed all the reforms that were made in Ukraine,” Mitchell said, answering the question of whether Ukraine should be part of NATO.
According to him, Ukraine is currently not close enough to membership.
“But we also recognized that there were defense reforms there. Our policy towards Ukraine is the same as towards others. We should not veto any country's desire to join NATO. If Ukraine wishes and will fulfill all obligations to join NATO, then we will not interfere with this in any way,” said the Assistant Secretary of State.
At the same time, he did not give a direct answer to the question of what the US position would be if Ukraine, under the current or another government, asks for membership in the Alliance.
“American policy is quite clear. We support the desire of both Ukraine and Georgia to become NATO members. And this reflects the natural desire of the peoples of these states. And once again it must be said: this question should also be addressed to the people of Ukraine and Georgia. Then the NATO alliance itself will decide whether these countries can become members of NATO or not,” he said
