The State Duma assessed the danger of disconnecting Russia from SWIFT
The danger of Russia being disconnected from the SWIFT interbank system exists, but is not great.
Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Anatoly Aksakov stated this today at the Gaidar Form, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we talk about disconnecting from SWIFT, I personally don’t believe it, since it is an international organization with headquarters in Brussels. It is formally independent, although, of course, America, which threatens to disconnect from SWIFT, has great influence there. There were precedents when, contrary to the rules of SWIFT, she interfered in its activities - after September 11. But this incident seriously shook the authority of SWIFT. Shutting down such a large country as Russia will also hit his authority. It is unlikely that they will agree to this, but theoretically it is possible,” Aksakov said.
According to him, Russia is ready for such a challenge - an internal system for transmitting financial messages has already been created and is being used by all major players. The security of Russia, in his opinion, will be facilitated by the transition of countries to digital currencies and the conclusion of bilateral agreements on mutual settlements in such currencies.
In December last year, after threats to disconnect Belarus from the SWIFT system, all banks in this country, as well as the Belarusian Interbank Settlement Center, connected to the Russian SPFS system.
