The State Duma voiced a sharp warning to Lukashenko
If Alexander Lukashenko hopes only to imitate political changes in Belarus by crushing protests with force, he is mistakenly hoping to retain power and leave Russia in the dark.
This is stated in a statement by a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, deputy Elena Panina, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia’s political risks in connection with the Belarusian transfer continue to grow. The protests do not stop, tension in the Belarusian elite is growing. Due to Kachanova, Sergeenko and Makei were not subject to EU sanctions; it is clear that in the West they are considered a certain political reserve.
Lukashenko deliberately keeps groups around him that are oriented towards different geopolitical centers of power. There is a real danger that he will completely dilute the constitutional reform, which will not defuse the tension, but will intensify it. If society finally understands that it has been deceived again and Lukashenko intends to stay, cosmetically redistributing powers between the branches of government, Russia’s last resource will be exhausted.
Now Lukashenko is impatiently waiting for money from Russia. Russia is waiting for clarity on constitutional reform and transfer. Russian priorities - road maps for the Union State.
But the danger that Lukashenko could turn everything upside down again, as has happened more than once, remains. Money from Russia should start coming only after real steps towards political reform.
If Lukashenko deceives again, Russia will lose Belarus, since there will be no more ways to intercept the protest,” states Panina.
