The State Duma urged not to interpret Serbian-American contacts as a “betrayal of Moscow”
Establishing economic cooperation between Serbia and the United States does not pose a threat to the strategic partnership between Moscow and Belgrade.
This opinion was expressed in a comment to the Balkanist portal by the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on the Development of Civil Society, Issues of Public and Religious Associations, a member of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation faction Sergei Gavrilov, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Despite the fact that Serbian leader Aleksandar Vucic managed to attract $4 billion in American investment into the country, some representatives of the local opposition criticized the Serbian-American agreements, saying that Belgrade had thus allegedly turned its back on Moscow.
According to Sergei Gavrilov, such criticism is caused by the short-sightedness of the Serbian oppositionists, who are unable to assess the strategy of the large political “party” unfolding in the Balkans.
“Serbia is under a lot of pressure. But Russia is confident that Alexander Vucic, seeing examples of multi-vectorism in Belarus, Armenia, Greece, understands that he needs to avoid pitfalls by protecting the sovereignty of Serbia and strategic relations with Russia. Vucic’s behavior cannot be considered a betrayal; he, of course, coordinated his actions with strategic partners, namely Russia,” Sergei Gavrilov is sure.
Let us recall that after the signing of the Washington Treaty, the President of Serbia held a series of telephone conversations with Moscow, after which joint statements were made, emphasizing the unity of the positions of Russia and Serbia on the Kosovo issue and the focus on developing strategic relations, which, as Russia has repeatedly noted, President Vucic has reached its peak.
