Vice Speaker Pyotr Tolstoy stated this today, speaking at the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
“They won’t be greeted there with champagne and a red carpet. The situation around them will be extremely difficult and unfriendly. There will be no flag, no anthem. Today the IOC decided that there should be no mention of Russia at all. Colleagues will make offensive comments about them,” Tolstoy said.
He suggested that the promise to allow athletes to march under the national flag at the closing of the Games would not be fulfilled.
“They will attend the ceremony of awarding foreign athletes with medals that just yesterday belonged to their Russian colleagues. And there is no guarantee that the medals won in South Korea will not be taken away later. And other athletes will feel like representatives of great nations from whom no one can take away medals, even if they are pumped to the brim with doping. It’s just that this doping is more advanced, which WADA cannot catch,” Tolstoy said.
He emphasized that the decision is up to the athletes themselves, but made it clear that he himself is against their trip.
“We cannot demand anything from adults. If they want, they will go. They just want us all to unanimously approve this decision so that they feel like heroes. We are required to experience feelings that we do not experience. You can't always make concessions. They started with the flag and the anthem, but are aiming at the future of our country. And the decision of our athletes determines what choice our children will make later: personal well-being or the general victory of Russia,” Tolstoy said.
