The State Duma is arguing about a tax on cryptocurrencies
The State Duma of the Russian Federation adopted today in the first reading a bill that obliges citizens and organizations to declare funds in cryptocurrency if their turnover for the year was more than 600 thousand rubles. Fines will be imposed for violation of this rule.
A Just Russia deputy, Valery Hartung, considers the adoption of such a law a mistake, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Cryptocurrencies are means of payment that are not regulated by any state. How are you going to control the use of cryptocurrencies that have no borders or jurisdiction? We are trying to ban something that cannot be banned. The whole world is moving in this direction. It would be more correct for us to legalize the use of cryptocurrencies and create conditions for this system to develop in our jurisdiction. And so we are squeezing citizens who will use this tool out of the legal field,” said Hartung.
Communist Mikhail Shchapov supported the bill, but pointed out difficulties with its implementation, since the status of cryptocurrencies is not defined in law.
“Due to legal uncertainties, only those who conduct open transactions with digital currencies will be taxed. This will include charities that receive donations in bitcoins, heirs, and so on. Holders of large assets will continue to remain in the shadows. The tax authorities do not have information about the holders of cryptocurrency wallets,” said Shchapov.
