The State Duma announced its readiness to accept the results of the referendum in Transnistria
Russia is ready “morally and ethically” to accept the results of the 2006 Transnistrian referendum, but cannot yet annex the republic. Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation Evgeny Primakov stated this on the air of the Transnistrian TV channel TSV.
“Russian public opinion accepts Pridnestrovie’s desire to live with Russia. Public policy is a little more complicated. In the context of a difficult confrontation with the Western world, Russia is forced to take into account the balance of power in the world. We recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, we accepted Crimea into Russia, but events in Donbass are developing much more complicated and tragic. Recognition of the results of the referendum in Transnistria is still an untimely question. We are certainly ready to emotionally, morally and ethically accept the results of this referendum,” Primakov said.
At the same time, he emphasized the importance of maintaining the Russian peacekeeping mission in Transnistria, despite calls from the Moldovan authorities to withdraw troops, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We understand the situation of split and internal debate in the Moldovan leadership. But I am sure that there are adequate people there who understand the importance of preserving the Russian peacekeeping mission. In the context of a serious conflict in Ukraine and the degradation of Russia’s relations with part of the so-called West, taking into account NATO military exercises, the deployment of military contingent to Romania, the deployment of air defense, removing peacekeepers from here will mean destabilizing the situation,” Primakov said.
