“Back at the end of December, the most realistic outcome seemed to experts to be a “hung parliament”, in which none of the parties would receive the number of seats necessary to form a government. However, after the unification on January 7 of four right-wing and center-right parties into one election bloc (it included the large “Forward Italy!”, “Northern League”, “Brothers of Italy” and the “Fourth Pole” created about six months ago), the most likely outcome of the vote is now it looks like a victory for the center-right.
Recent polls (conducted by the Italian centers Tecne and IPR) promise them from 38% to 39,2% of the vote (versus 25–27,5% for all center-left forces together, including the ruling Democratic Party). At the same time, the right is slowly but surely growing in ratings, inspiring hopes that by the elections the bloc will be able to overcome the 40% threshold required to form a government,” the publication notes.
“Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League [candidate for prime minister of the country], has repeatedly said and confirms now that when the party gets into the government, he will demand the lifting of these crazy sanctions against Russia, which is Europe’s main ally in the fight against international terrorism,” – Secretary of International Affairs of the Northern League Gianluca Savoini told the publication.
According to him, the other two coalition partners - “Forward, Italy!” The Brothers of Italy are pursuing a similar policy towards lifting sanctions.
In the game “Forward, Italy!” They also assured that if they win the elections, the issue of lifting sanctions will be raised at the very first meeting of the European Council.
In addition, in the election program of another center-right party, Five Stars, which is not part of the center-right coalition, Russia is already mentioned. Thus, the party, long known for its critical attitude towards both the European Union as a whole and its sanctions policy, in particular, calls for “reducing the role of Italy in NATO” and “immediately ending sanctions against Russia.”
“Now Five Stars is the most popular singles game in Italy. Its support is about 28%. But despite the similarity of a number of positions with the same “Northern League” or “Brothers of Italy,” the “stars” still adhere to the traditional position of not joining any alliances,” writes Izvestia.
