Member of the European Parliament Matteo Salvini and the leader of the Italian opposition party Northern League, which advocates leaving the EU, said this in an interview with Izvestia.
“Italy is a country without political and financial sovereignty,” the politician is sure. – What can the Italian government do other than obey the dictates? If the next government adheres to the sovereign vector, then all these issues will be actively discussed, and the policy will be different - it will meet the interests of Italians.”
He claims that the Italian government “does not decide anything on its own,” and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi “is waiting for direct instructions from Angela Merkel and Brussels.”
The publication’s interlocutor also commented on Matteo Renzi’s participation in the recently held St. Petersburg Economic Forum.
“I hope the Russians don’t believe Matteo Renzi’s propaganda. He arrived in St. Petersburg and made several “good” statements about Russia. After that, he returned to Italy and immediately - I emphasize, immediately - voted for the extension of sanctions against the Russian Federation,” Salvini noted. – Matteo Renzi and the entire Italian government are a tool in the hands of the transnational lobby. The only force that effectively opposed anti-Russian actions, including in regional parliaments, was the Northern League. Because of our joint work with the Lombardy-Russia association, famous resolutions were adopted in Veneto, Lombardy, Liguria, Tuscany and Piedmont. “I’ll take this opportunity to say that together with the head of the association, Gianluca Savoini, we are planning to visit Russia in the fall.”
