This appointment is the result of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to change the composition of his government. CBC News reports.
Consequently, Freeland will replace Stephane Dion, who is leaving politics to take up a diplomatic post.
Note that Freeland was born in the Canadian city of Peace River in the province of Alberta. Her mother, Galina Khomyak-Freeland, is of Ukrainian descent.
Freeland began her journalistic career in Ukraine as a stringer for the Financial Times, The Washington Post and The Economist.
She subsequently worked at the Financial Times in London as deputy editor, UK news editor, Moscow bureau chief, Eastern Europe correspondent, weekend editor and editor of FT.com.
Khomyak-Freeland later announced her intention to run for election to the Canadian Parliament from the Liberal Party.
She won the internal party primaries on September 15, 2013 and was elected to parliament on November 25.
