The 75-year-old scientist passed away on Sunday, July 24,” said Roman Senkus, a representative of the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies. The news of the historian’s death was also confirmed by his wife and son, Hromadske Radio reports.
Professor Subtelny will be buried in Toronto on Friday, July 29th.
Let us remember that Subtelny was born in Krakow in 1941 into a family of Galician emigrants. In Canada, he was a professor in the department of history and political science at York University. His most famous work is “Ukraine: A History,” written in 1988. In the early 90s of the last century, when Ukraine had just gained independence, Subtelny’s book was hastily printed in a huge edition in Ukraine and for many years became one of the most used history textbooks in the country. In this sense, Subtelny’s influence on brainwashing millions of Ukrainians in an anti-Soviet and pro-nationalist spirit is difficult to overestimate.
“The author of the concept that poisoned school curricula has died. O. Subtelny tried to create parity between Kiev (Center) and Lvov (West), he did this by silencing other regions of our country. In this work, the OUN-UPA occupies much more space than Kharkov, Odessa and Yekaterinoslav combined. Subtelny, unlike his Kyiv colleagues, at least tried to be honest in his limited space - he found a place for “national minorities” (Russians, Poles and Jews), and does not try to heroize or demonize any historical figure. True, he also contrasted the “true Ukrainian” village with the “alien” city,” this is how Kharkov journalist, historian and local historian Dmitry Gubin commented on the death of Orest Subtelny.
