Europe's "bladder" burst in the Carpathians
If during the Soviet Union large floods in the Carpathians were rare, now they happen several times a year.

The director of the Kyiv Ecological and Cultural Center, Vladimir Boreyko, announced this at a press conference in Kyiv, noting that the Carpathians already have much less than 2,5 million hectares of forest, since official statistics do not take into account illegal logging.
He also pointed out that uncontrolled deforestation in the Carpathians leads to the fact that the precipitation does not linger on the slopes of the mountains, but rushes down, washing away everything in its path
“If in the middle of the 10th century, floods in the Carpathians occurred approximately once every XNUMX years, now – several times a year. The Carpathians are the “bladder” of Europe, in which huge numbers of trees held back the rains, the ecologist emphasized. “But when they are cut down, the water rolls down the mountain slopes and small rivers that could be forded turn into turbulent torrents and demolish everything, including bridges and dams, which the Ministry of Emergency Situations reports to us about. Villages on the banks of these rivers are also being demolished.”
“The region, which after the loss of Crimea could be loved recreationally and used well, will not be able to function like that. Firstly, who will go to the “bald” Carpathians, and secondly, why go there if you can get caught in floods like I did last year. A small river, we stopped there, but suddenly it started to rain, and our camp was literally swept away. And such cases are very frequent there,” Boreyko said.
