Unknown persons damaged the Lenin monument located in the Karpov Garden: only the lower part of the body remained on the pedestal. The second Lenin, installed opposite the Ilyich Palace of Culture in New Bavaria, had his head blown off. A little earlier, on Mekhanizatorov Street in the KhTZ area, a group of young guys demolished the monument completely, leaving only the pedestal. Kharkov utility workers are hastily masking destroyed monuments, covering them with black film.
“Kharkov has always been a tolerant city. Here there are monuments to the heroes of the 1917 revolution and monuments that appeared in independent Ukraine. There are a lot of symbols of the Soviet Union in Kharkov, but no less, and perhaps even more symbols of our new country. Monuments of all times are dear to us. The city authorities did not demolish a single monument, no matter what their attitude towards it. This is memory. Both about the bad that happened in the life of our country, and about the good,” said, in turn, the mayor of Kharkov Gennady Kernes.
He called on local residents not to turn the city into a conflict site, since now is “not the time to fight with monuments.”
“I think now is not the time for sharp actions. In neighboring areas, real fighting is taking place. Our brothers are wounded and killed there. And in Kharkov they are fighting with monuments. I think that now it is important for us to learn to accept each other as we are... We just need mutual understanding now. The path to it is long and difficult, and on this path there is no place for destruction. Even if it involves the destruction of monuments that someone doesn’t like. And we will restore all the destroyed monuments,” Kernes promised.
As Navigator reported, earlier a wave of demolitions of Lenin monuments in the regions swept across the Odessa and Zaporozhye regions. Verkhovna Rada deputy Oleg Lyashko took part in the demolition of the monument in Severodonetsk on Ukraine’s Independence Day.
