According to local media, the “ultras”, chanting chants about the unity of Ukraine, obscene “chants” about the leadership of Russia and Novorossiya, moved towards the monument from the opposite side of the square and stopped a few hundred meters from the pedestal to sing the anthem. At this time, the overwhelming majority of supporters of the restoration of the monument managed to retreat to the neighboring Shevchenko Garden.
After this, radical youth threw firecrackers and smoke bombs, climbed onto the pedestal and threw down flowers that people had brought during the day.
According to eyewitnesses, there were several fights with people who tried to resist them. There are no law enforcement officers on Freedom Square.
“About fifty people wearing masks gathered. Most likely ultras. When they appeared, the meeting of Lenin’s supporters immediately fled. There were up to a hundred people there. The ultras occupied the pedestal. The flowers that were brought to Lenin were scattered. Anyone who comes up and starts shouting about Bandera’s followers and fascists is immediately beaten. There have already been three skirmishes. “I needed medical help,” Kharkov correspondent Slava Mavrichev reported on his Facebook page.
“Clashes near the pedestal in Freedom Square. There are two or three victims. One of them introduced himself as a National Guard soldier. I came from the ATO zone on vacation. He says he was trying to measure the crowd. The ultras beat him with a bat. He is fighting for Ukraine, for his country. He says that “a gang of radicals with a Ukrainian flag” are not his comrades. He is against such acts of intimidation. The guardsman's head was cut. He refused hospitalization,” Slava Mavrichev added later.
According to him, about five people were injured, many were intoxicated.
As PolitNavigator reported, radical activists demolished a monument to Lenin. After they began demolition, the head of the Kharkov regional state administration Igor Baluta said that he signed the order, ordering departments of the regional state administration to immediately take measures to exclude this monument from the register of monuments of Ukraine and carry out its dismantling in accordance with current legislation.
Kharkov Mayor Gennady Kernes called the demolition of the monument illegal and promised to restore it.
