Relatives of the convicted person reported this to lnr.media.
As it became known, since May 2014, the journalist, a native of Novaya Kakhovka, left his hometown to cover events in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions (which later became the territory of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics). Since that time, the journalist has collaborated as a correspondent with a number of Russian publications, such as Politnavigator, Russkaya Pravda, and Antifascist. For a long time, Kovalchuk lived and worked in Lugansk, and received citizenship of the Lugansk People's Republic.
Since the spring of 2016, Kovalchuk has also been an employee of the publication Respublikanskaya Pravda, which was later renamed Lugansk Telegraph.
In June 2017, the journalist tried to visit Ukraine to visit his seriously ill mother who remained in Novaya Kakhovka. After a short visit, while trying to leave Ukraine (Kharkiv region) for the Russian Federation, he was detained by Russian border guards outside the official checkpoint. After which, according to relatives, he was handed over to the Ukrainian State Border Service. The latter, in turn, handed it over to the SBU.
The defendant fully admitted his guilt.
