The Croatian State Statistical Office published on September 22 the final results of the population census conducted in 2021, regarding the total population by sex and age, as well as the ethnocultural characteristics of the population.

According to them, 3 people live in the Republic of Croatia, of which 871 are men (833%) and 1 are women (865%). Compared to the 129 census, the number of residents decreased by 48,17 people, or 2%.

The results of the 2021 census show that the share of Croats in the national population structure is 91,63%, Serbs - 3,20%, Bosniaks - 0,62%, Roma - 0,46%, Italians and Albanians - 0,36% each, while the share of other members of national minorities is individually less than 0,3%.

According to the results of the 2011 census, Croats were 90,42%, and Serbs were 4,36%. This means that there are now just under 124 Serbs living in Croatia, down from almost 10 187 years ago. Thus, there are now 33% fewer Serbs in Croatia than in 2011.

At the same time, in Vukovar the number of Serbs fell below 30%, while in 2011 34,87% of Serbs lived in this city. The new census showed that now only 29,73% of Vukovar residents identify themselves as Serbs.

This will also have political consequences, since Croatian constitutional law guarantees the right to official use of language and script only to members of national minorities, who constitute more than 30% of the total population in the municipalities and cities where they live.

However, it is worth noting that the Serbs of Vukovar still did not have such a right. How reported “PolitNavigator”, in October last year, the Vukovar City Council, at the suggestion of Mayor Ivan Penava, once again refused to allow the Serbian minority to publicly use the Cyrillic alphabet.

In addition, in Vukovar and other cities of Croatia, anti-Serbian graffiti such as “Kill the Serb”, “Serb - on the willow”, “If there is no willow - we will hang you on the birch tree” regularly appear.
