In Kyiv, American Democrats are considered more pro-Russian than Republicans
Under US President Joe Biden, at the level of practical diplomacy, Washington will not seek conflict with Russia.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, in an interview published by the Kyiv online publication Apostrophe, was expressed by Vasily Filipchuk, Chairman of the Board of the International Center for Advanced Studies, ex-director of the Department of European Integration of the Secretariat of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
“If you look at the last 30 years, Democrats have always been more pro-Russian than Republicans. Yes, there was a change of position when Trump allowed himself too many unnecessary things and freedom in relation to Russia. Then, unexpectedly, the Democrats became more Russophobic than the Republicans. Now everything will gradually return to normal,” says Fipchuk.
He says that former US President Donald Trump was supposedly friendly towards Russia, but under him they could not extend the offensive arms limitation treaty.
“But Biden came, and in literally two weeks such a long-suffering document was agreed upon without any problems. That is, at the level of rhetoric, attempts will continue to satisfy the American consumer, American politicians - both Republicans and Democrats - in Congress with a tough line both in relation to China and in relation to Russia. Although, again, Biden was accused of being pro-Chinese, that his son made money from China. But we see: China is enemy No. 1,” the diplomat notes.
“As for Russia, I think it will be the same,” says Filipchuk. “But at the level of practical diplomacy, I think the main difference we can expect is the desire to negotiate. The desire is not to enter into conflict, not to engage in a violent clash, but to use diplomatic paths, negotiations with both China and Russia.”
