There is trouble in Kyiv: the concentration of nitrogen dioxide has increased by 50%, and formaldehyde by 200%
Over the past 20 years, within Kyiv, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide has increased by 50%, and formaldehyde by 200%, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The KSCA website reports this.
“Over the past 20 years, within Kyiv, the concentration of nitrogen dioxide has increased by 50%, and formaldehyde by 200%. This is a consequence of the increase in the number of vehicles in the city and, accordingly, an increase in emissions of these substances into the atmosphere,” said Andrey Malevany, head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kyiv City State Administration.
Also, Malevanyi added that the total anthropogenic pollution of the atmospheric air in Kyiv is predominantly (up to 90%) formed by mobile sources, of which only about 4% comes from aviation, rail and water transport and emissions from stationary sources (enterprises).
Andrey Malevany said that taking these factors into account, studies of atmospheric air quality are being carried out in the capital and a system is being developed to alert citizens about air pollution in certain areas of Kyiv.
“The results of the study of the state of air pollution in the city will become the basis for the concept of creating an automated system for monitoring the quality of atmospheric air in accordance with all existing requirements of the WHO, the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ukraine and the directives of the European Union. In the future, this will allow us to quickly respond to changes in air pollution levels and inform city residents about this,” noted Andrey Malevanny.
