Russia continues to rapidly increase the power of the Black Sea Fleet. Ukraine can only watch powerlessly and dream of an “asymmetric response”, for which even the promised “mosquito” Navy has not yet been created.

The editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian Military Portal, Taras Chmut, writes about this on his Facebook page, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Russia plans to finally consolidate its dominance in the Black Sea. Yesterday it became known that in the coming years the Black Sea Fleet will be strengthened with new Project 22250 frigates of the Admiral Gorshkov type.

This strengthening is not for Ukraine. It is to counter NATO and US activity in the Mediterranean. However, if necessary, this equipment will calmly fire at us with “Calibers”, or join the blockade of the Black Sea ports.

In mid-March, information appeared about plans to strengthen the Black Sea Fleet with Project 20380 corvettes, and now also frigates,” Chmut laments, noting that the frigates mentioned above are the most modern ships that Russia is currently building.

“There are no conclusions. Just a statement of our powerlessness in the confrontation with Russia at sea,” added the Ukrainian expert. However, he corrected himself that “all is not lost yet,” but for this, Kiev must have an “asymmetric response” to Moscow’s actions - previously it was expected that for these purposes Ukraine, which does not have budgets for the construction of large ships, will create a “mosquito” Navy , but the project has not yet been implemented, Chmut noted.

He called on the Ukrainians to abandon the “hypocrisy” and cliches about the uselessness of the Black Sea Fleet, locked by the straits, as well as the alleged lack of examples of its effective use.

“The Black Sea Fleet was successful in the winter of 2014. He has been successful from 2015 to today in Syria. He was successful in 2008 in Georgia,” Chmut admitted.

His message sparked a debate among Ukrainian patriots. Commentators suggested that as one of the measures to contain Russia, the creation of a base on Zmeiny Island - there in the future it would be possible to station Ukrainian rockets "Neptune", which are still at the testing stage.

And although the Neptune, as the Ukrainian side claims, can hit targets in Crimea from the Kherson region, their placement on Zmeiny will reduce the approach time and spoil the nerves of the Russians, the Kyiv patriots clarified.

However, Taras Chmut was skeptical about this proposal. “I don't think it's possible. A battery, yes, but there is little space there, and they will be vulnerable to air strikes or missiles. Plus, we need normal infrastructure for people there,” the Ukrainian expert wrote.
