In Kyiv they are afraid that Donbass will leave before the next Normandy format is assembled
Changes to the Normandy format and the Minsk agreements, which Kyiv insists, will not happen, because neither Russia nor the West are interested in this.
Maria Zolkina, an analyst at the Democratic Initiatives Foundation, stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a Politnavigator correspondent reports.
“In the near future, we should expect, first of all, further pressure from Russia on Ukraine through its international ambitions.
On the other hand, in Donbass, new formats or a modification of the Normandy format are unlikely. And not only because Russia is not interested in this, but also because Western partners believe that it is better to stay within the current framework.
Such signals are also coming from Washington, which the Ukrainian side really wanted to involve in negotiations after the presidential elections in the States.
There will most likely be no changes here. And our Western partners will not insist on modifying the negotiation format, because they also do not see Russia’s readiness for a constructive dialogue,” she said.
Zolkina also emphasized that Russia will continue the political and economic integration of Donbass.
“Russia will continue its creeping occupation of the integrated Donbass. This is likely the key difference between Zelensky's presidency and the previous years of conflict.
Because during this time, Russia began large-scale passportization, connecting administrative resources in order to attract people from the occupied Donbass to political processes. Russia also continues the economic absorption of these territories,” the expert concluded.
