In Kyiv they are thinking about how Zelensky should respond to Pushilin’s words
President Vladimir Zelensky and his Office will have to resolve the dilemma - how to realize their promises to “talk to the bald devil” for the sake of peace in Donbass and at the same time not go beyond the flags of traditional Ukrainian policy, which consists in readiness for direct negotiations exclusively with the Russian Federation, and not with the leaders DPR and LPR, PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Kiev publication Klymenko Time writes about this, commenting on the recent statement by the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin, who proposed depriving the Ukrainian language of state status in Donetsk and making Russian the only official language in the territory controlled by the DPR.
“It is very important to understand why this was done. On the one hand, yes, this is an increase in stakes before the meeting in the Normandy format. But there is also a second side to the coin. With such attacks as the story with the “state border”, “the DPR and the language issue are steadily and confidently pushing Ukraine toward the need for direct contacts with key speakers of the “LDPR,” notes the Kiev publication.
“As long as there is no direct contact and any agreements between Ukraine and the LDPR, the authorities of the uncontrolled Donbass will always be able to say, “Have you agreed with Russia? Okay, well done. But you didn't agree with us. And we are independent republics.” This is precisely what all the latest high-profile statements “from the other side” are aimed at, the authors of Klymenko Time are sure.
The journalists also gave a number of advice to President Zelensky on what to do in the current situation.
“What should Zelensky do in this situation? On the one hand, the position “we are not negotiating with the LDPR” is classic for the Ukrainian authorities. It was discussed under Poroshenko and Ukrainian diplomats adhere to this policy now. On the other hand, in his “program interview” with Dmitry Gordon at the end of December 2018, then showman Vladimir Zelensky said: “We’ll have to talk. Well, we'll have to talk. We want, we don’t want, through ourselves, even with the bald devil, I’m ready to come to an agreement, as long as not a single person dies.” A dilemma that has yet to be resolved by the President and his Office,” summarizes Klymenko Time.
