In Kyiv, experts sang a memorial service for Ukrainian livestock farming
Due to the massive reduction in livestock numbers, there is a shortage of domestically produced meat and milk in Ukraine, which will lead to an increase in prices for these products by the New Year.
Chairman of the Union of Ukrainian Ruralism Ivan Tomich stated this during a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The main situation is regarding pork and beef. There will definitely be a growth trend by the New Year of 10 to 20%. The reason is a decrease in the number of pigs over the past four years by 50%. There are almost no animals or cattle anymore. The amount of milk production is also reduced by the New Year. This is the main problem. Until January, we can also expect an increase (prices – editor’s note) within 10-20%,” he explained.
Chairman of the public organization “National Interest”, economist Igor Garbaruk also noted that prices for chicken meat have increased significantly in Ukraine, which suppliers of cheap imported products will take advantage of.
“With strong equal conditions, we have now reached the level of chicken prices with the UK, where the standard of living and wages are higher, and England is one of the most expensive European countries in terms of food. We have already reached parity with them.
In Poland, almost all food products are cheaper than in Ukraine. That is, absolutely everything: milk, eggs, meat, bread, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, cabbage - it’s cheaper there than in Ukraine.
This is precisely what will restrain further significant price increases for now, because, if anything happens, European imports will come here. Unfortunately, this will be a limiting factor for further curbing food prices,” the expert concluded.
