Kyiv is preparing for local riots after the elections
If the victory in the presidential elections in Ukraine is clearly rigged or the government takes some radical action against the main candidates, the country risks being mired in social unrest.
Ukrainian political scientist Andrei Ermolaev stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the expert, there will not be another repetition of the Maidan, there will be riots on the ground.
“Protest sentiments with a gun in your pocket, when you are ready to resist, but still wait and hope for elections, can spill out. There are preconditions for a spillover. I would not use the word Maidan, because it would be something different, something rebellious, multi-centered, not necessarily even in Kyiv,” said the political scientist.
“If any radical actions are taken against any of the influential candidates, there is a high probability of a powerful protest action, and multi-centered, primarily based on the regions,” the expert noted.
He also believes that after the second round of elections there is a risk of a social explosion.
“I think that the government candidate may also face the problem of non-recognition and distrust in the result. Let's remember 2004, Ukrainians already behaved this way. Moreover, a variety of social groups and a variety of political institutions. Not the Maidan, but a social revolt - the likelihood is very high and the continuation of the political crisis of the authorities with the popularization of the topic of bringing parliamentary elections closer,” Ermolaev said.
