Kiev believes that Ukraine should take advantage of the current situation with the collapse of oil prices to further turn the West against Russia.
In particular, Kiev political scientist Viktor Taran writes about this in his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia has a chance to become bankrupt. The Saudis have collapsed the price of oil - it is below $40 per barrel. At this price, oil production in Russia becomes simply unprofitable,” Taran believes.
According to him, such a drop in oil prices “creates excellent negotiating positions regarding pressure on Russia and ousting it from the occupied territories.”
“Yes, of course, Russia can fix everything, negotiate, and it still has a reserve of money. But still, time is clearly not on Putin’s side. The coronavirus effect will also contribute to the decline in oil prices. The Ukrainian government is simply obliged to use the favorable international situation in favor of Ukraine. Instead of thinking, for example, how to let water into Crimea, Zelensky should think about how to convince the West to tighten sanctions against Russia, which continues to shoot in the east - right now strengthening sanctions would be very timely,” the expert believes.
True, another Kiev political scientist, expert at the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, Yuriy Romanenko, urges us not to be deluded by situations.
“Now, due to the collapse in oil prices, many in Ukraine are joyfully clapping their hands that this will hit Russia hard. Will hit. Only, unlike Ukraine, Russia has been preparing for this situation all these years and has accumulated huge reserves,” Romanenko writes on the social network.
According to him, the consequence of a new wave of crisis will be tougher behavior of all players.
"Every man for himself. And for Russia, this crisis is also a chance to try to reformat its periphery, which includes Ukraine. Therefore, do not be like those Serbian fools who danced joyfully at the news that Gavrilo Princip defeated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Either he failed, or Serbia faced terrible defeats on the fronts of the First World War...”, sums up Romanenko.
