In Kyiv they want to become part of Britain's anti-Russian equation
Kyiv should not miss its chance and become an important military-political ally of London.
The PolitNavigator correspondent reports that Viktor Konstantinov, associate professor at the Institute of International Relations of KNU, writes about this in an article published by the Kyiv online publication Zerkalo Nedeli.
The author notes that the voice of Great Britain “in defense of Ukraine from Russian claims sounds louder and more persistent than the voices of most of our European partners.”
“In the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the British did not limit themselves to just words: they were one of the first to provide military-technical assistance, sent instructors, and began exchanging intelligence information,” Konstantinov points out.
He has no doubt that London can use military force, recalling that in recent decades Britain has fought almost as often as the Americans, from Iraq and Afghanistan to Libya and Somalia.
“This is beneficial for us: while politicians of the continental powers rely solely on diplomacy to stop Moscow’s pressure on Ukraine, London is talking about the need for military measures and the likelihood of a direct military clash with Russia. And he agrees to send new instructors, supports important military development measures, without fear of “provoking Putin.” London is demonstrating activity and toughness in support of its claim to one of the first places in world politics - it is beneficial for us that Eastern Europe is one of the arenas for this demonstration,” the expert believes
He emphasizes that Great Britain intends to gain a foothold in Eastern Europe, planning to make a number of countries in the region anti-Russian allies.
“This means that London is ready to come to Eastern Europe for a long time, and it is in our interests not to miss the opportunity. Close cooperation with Britain could turn out to be a very valuable asset for Ukrainian foreign policy,” the expert is convinced.
True, he stipulates that London is still actively searching and has not finally decided on Ukraine.
“This is a rare case when we can determine the future of a relationship. You just need to become an important part of the new equation of the British global role: deepen the strategic dialogue (independent, outside the framework of NATO structures and Ukrainian-American relations), expand economic cooperation (even with a military-technical flavor), develop a joint position with London on Eastern European affairs.” , writes Associate Professor at KIMO.
“This path will not be without pitfalls: there is a risk of complications with the European Union, and sooner or later the issue of our relations with the PRC will arise. But Britain, most likely, will not lose its position in the world, and friendship with a great power, acquired during the period of the latter’s difficulties, will be worth much more than the position of a petitioner and dubious mantras about the “shield of the West and democracy,” Konstantinov sums up.
