Kyiv, February 27 (PolitNavigator, Vladimir Mikhailov) – On Friday, a picket was held near the walls of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine in Kyiv demanding the release of Yuriy Pavlenko, who was detained in December after the storming of the Vinnitsa regional administration by Ukrainian nationalists. Then Pavlenko allegedly trampled on a portrait of Petro Poroshenko and spoke obscenely at the president. However, the participants in the picket in Kyiv – activists of the Volya party – consider the prisoner a “political prisoner.”

“We demand the release of Yuriy Pavlenko (Hort), whom we consider a political prisoner, the first to appear in Ukraine after the Revolution of Dignity. The entire repressive apparatus that remained after Yanukovych is in effect. These people threaten Ukrainian statehood by persecuting activists. In the case of Yuri Pavlenko there was not a single piece of evidence for the actions that he is accused of. Police and prosecutors referred to a video that supposedly existed, but it was not provided. The only evidence is photographs that appear to show Hort standing in a crowd of other protesters during the events in Vinnitsa in December.

According to him, the information in the media does not correspond to reality. What took place was not a seizure of the regional council building, but a meeting of activists with the goal of preventing the re-election of the head of the regional council, whom the activists did not trust.
“The entire regional council was and remains under the “regionals,” and they tried to change the person whom Vinnitsa activists trust. There were provocations there, titushki, who remain in Vinnitsa and operate under the cover of the private security company "Gepard". All these provocations led to something that should not have happened. People wanted to attend a meeting of the regional council, where they have the right to be, because they elected these people. They didn’t let people in, they used titushki and the police, they escalated the situation instead of just letting people into the hall. There were also those who followed the lead. There may have been mutual use of force. But people entered the building accompanied by the current head of the regional council. There can be no seizure if you enter the building in the presence of the head of the organization that owns the building,” Boniuk explained the logic of the defense in an interview with a PolitNavigator correspondent.
