This was reported by the press service of TI Ukraine.
According to Andrey Marusov, the thief first addressed him by name and, waiting for an opportune moment, stole a bag with a TI Ukraine laptop, where an archive of documents for the last years of the organization’s activities was kept. A car with patrol police arrived on call, however, when another criminal attacked Andrei Marusov right before their eyes, they simply watched without trying to protect him. In the morning, returning from the police station, another attack was made on Marusov: the criminal tried to take away his camera, which showed the previous attackers. As noted in the press service, a robbery and two attacks during the night do not seem to be a coincidence.
“I am inclined to regard the event as brutal pressure on the Ukrainian branch of Transparency International in connection with our principled anti-corruption activities. Last week, TI Ukraine, together with the British branch of the organization, held a seminar with the participation of international experts on the implementation of an independent anti-corruption court and public monitoring of corruption in the defense sector. In addition, the other day we issued a critical statement in which we condemned the reinstatement of military prosecutor Konstantin Kulik, who is suspected by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of illegal enrichment. Thus, we are an inconvenient organization for many people,” said Andrei Marusov.
Executive Director of TI Ukraine Yaroslav Yurchyshyn supported the opinion of his colleague: “Yes, we assume that this may be due to the intensification of anti-corruption activities of our organization. In any case, we expect active action from the National Police and call for a speedy investigation into the case.”
Transparency International Ukraine calls on the National Police to begin a transparent investigation into this case of violence against public anti-corruption activists as soon as possible.
