In Kyiv, three scenarios for the development of the gas conflict with Russia were named
There are several scenarios for the development of events with the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine after the expiration of the current contract on January 1, 2020.
Energy expert Gennady Ryabtsev stated this on the Ukrainian Channel 4, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The 2009 scenario may be repeated. On the second or third of January there will be a revealing statement from the Russian side that “Ukraine is stealing gas” and the valve will be tightened live. Then it is possible that it happened in 2009 - the EU countries put pressure on Ukraine to sign any agreement so that transit gas supplies to the EU could be resumed.
The second scenario is that the parties may not notice that a new year has begun and continue negotiations by default, continuing to fulfill the relevant obligations - Russia for supplies, Ukraine for ensuring transit.
The third option is when Ukraine says that since there is no contract, let’s stop transit. But this is unlikely. One of our international obligations is to ensure transit,” Ryabtsev said.
