The newspaper recalls that the leaders of the self-proclaimed LPR and DPR did not accept Poroshenko’s offer to capitulate in exchange for “decentralization.” Over the past week, there have been fierce battles in the cities of two regions between militias and participants in the anti-terrorist operation. The commander of the self-defense forces, Igor Strelkov, said in an interview with LifeNews that after Poroshenko takes office, the situation will only worsen.
On the day of inauguration, it became known that the United States would allocate an additional $48 million to Ukraine to strengthen its borders, the publication notes. At the same time, US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed hope that Russia will help “force the separatists to lay down their arms and vacate the buildings.”
Director of the Department of Information Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Evgeniy Perebiynis in a commentary to NG said that Russian border guards not only do not respond to reports from their Ukrainian colleagues about the impending illegal border crossing from the Russian Federation, but even “actively assist the violators.”
Political scientist Taras Berezovets noted that official Moscow may have nothing to do with the militias of the self-proclaimed republics. But without the participation of the Russian leadership, it is hardly possible to stop the feeding of illegal armed groups.
