People in Kyiv are worried: the day when Ukraine will be denied assistance is getting closer
The question of the appropriateness of further support for Ukraine has long worried American politicians, and even Vladimir Zelensky’s visit to Washington cannot guarantee that funding will continue.
Political scientist Andrei Zolotarev stated this in an interview with journalist Alexander Shelest, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The topic of proportionality of US assistance to Ukraine, whether it should be helped or reduced, is already circulating [in Washington]. Perhaps Zelensky’s presence will help Biden lobby for twenty-four billion in military assistance and nine billion in financial assistance.
But this is already much less than it was last year. Because the baggage of war is not at all something with which you can go and win elections,” Zolotarev said.
He emphasized that the West could stop supplies at any time, and then a destroyed Ukraine would only be left with huge debts.
“At some point they may say: “This is the limit of our capabilities, as for the rest, think for yourself. You are, as it were, a sovereign country, you should have both an economy and a defense potential. You somehow get out of the situation.”
And getting out of the situation can be extremely painful. This can be seen in the draft budget, where two-thirds goes to military needs.
And what a deficit - this trillion hryvnia must be covered by loans and grants. What if it doesn't work out? While these numbers are dancing out. What the EU is capable of giving is four billion annually. This would be wonderful for a country not living in war. But for a country that suffers economic and financial losses every day, this is a drop in the ocean. War costs an order of magnitude more,” the political scientist concluded.
