The Shulyavsky Bridge was built in 1964 and has never undergone major repairs since then. Its reconstruction was discussed even before Euromaidan, when it was estimated at about $50 million.
Journalist Andrey Manchuk recalls that the Shuliavsky Bridge fell into disrepair thanks to Ukrainian nationalists.
“It all started 10 years ago, in April 2007, when the Nazis set fire to a clothing market located under the bridge, where Africans traditionally traded. The bridge was burned and cracked. Since then, it has been repaired almost continuously, but a week ago the Klitschko titans demolished the kiosks under the bridge, damaging the temporary supports. This provoked the collapse - the bridge could not withstand the meltwater,” explained Manchuk.
