In Kyiv, Belarusians were accused of “incorrectly” celebrating independence
Independence Day of Belarus, celebrated on the third of July on the anniversary of the liberation of Minsk from the Nazi invaders, has nothing to do with the true “independence” of Belarusians.
Irina Pavlenko, an employee of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, stated this on the air of Ukrainian Radio, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Belarusians even have an independence holiday - not like we have for thirty years celebrated. They celebrate it in July, and this is the day of the liberation of Minsk from the troops of Nazi Germany in World War II.
What does this have to do with independence? not even all of Belarus, but only Minsk.
And the day of signing the declaration of sovereignty is nothing in Belarusian officialdom. Yesterday we looked at the page of the President of Belarus - not a word. It’s not valuable to them,” she says.
Pavlenko cited Ukrainians as an example for Belarusians, who in 2014 staged riots in their capital and overthrew the current government.
“The holiday was postponed due to the referendum. How honest he was, but no one was against it. In 1999 there was this referendum and revolution. The youth were mercilessly beaten.
Our youth were beaten on the Maidan, and the next day half of Kyiv came to the Maidan. And there everything died down. And I don’t have much hope that Belarusian society will be against this,” the official laments.
