In Kyiv they explained why Poroshenko “threw away” the Mejlis members
The Ukrainian authorities are afraid to satisfy the demands of the Mejlis banned in Russia and create a fake Crimean Tatar autonomy.
The essence of these fears was explained on the air of the Crimean Tatar TV channel ATR by the ex-representative of Ukraine in the Venice Commission Marina Stavniychuk.
“The issue is not only about the Crimean Tatar people. A question will immediately arise among many indigenous peoples in Western Ukraine. These sentiments will definitely be fueled by other countries. This is a very delicate issue, and our government is behaving like a bull in a china shop. There is no public discussion,” Stavniychuk said.
She also pointed out that from the point of view of the Ukrainian constitution, changing the status of Crimea is now impossible, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“According to Article 135, the Constitution of Crimea is adopted by the Supreme Council of Crimea, and then approved by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The authorities must propose a legitimate algorithm,” Stavniychuk said.
