Russia allegedly promised Japan that it would discuss the issue of transferring the four Kuril Islands if Tokyo did not support Ukraine.
Ukrainian political scientist and economist Oleg Soskin stated this during a chat on the website of a Kyiv online publication, answering the question of why the issue of ownership of the Kuril Islands has now suddenly become relevant.
“Because it is very important for Russia that Japan does not stand up in full force to defend Ukraine. Japan today takes a rather treacherous position towards Ukraine. She did not openly speak out against Russia, did not make appropriate decisions and statements supporting Ukraine’s position and condemning the actions of the Russian Federation,” the expert said.
At the same time, he says that Russia is simply leading the Japanese by the nose.
“Russia promises the Japanese that if they continue to not openly support Ukraine with money, technology, investment injections, diplomatic and foreign policy means, then it is ready to discuss with Japan the transfer of these four islands. But Moscow, as always, lies and simply leads the Japanese by the nose. The Japanese are stupid, they drool, and they think they will outplay Russia. In fact, Russia has one goal - Japan should not become a strategic ally of Ukraine in the fight against Russia,” says Soskin.
