EU ultimatum announced in Kyiv
If Ukraine does not receive the promised status of an EU candidate country in the near future, this will kill the population's faith in the European project and will be a moral victory for Vladimir Putin.
The participants of the Kyiv Security Forum spoke about this, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Thus, Vice-Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Elena Kondratyuk announced that obtaining such a status will allow Ukraine to “break out of the gray zone of influence of the Russian Federation.”
Kondratyuk believes that the refusal to grant such status will be a victory for Vladimir Putin, since it will “demonstrate that the EU again has no unity, no cohesion around Ukraine.”
Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Olga Stefanishina agreed with her.
“Until the last minute, until the summit ends, we will fight for this decision, because it is significant not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe. Either we will strengthen Europe with this decision, or the Russian position. European countries are afraid of Russia, do not see Ukraine in their family, etc.
Clearly, European leaders must realize that there will not be another historical moment when there will be such a mobilization of their society and parliaments to support Ukraine. I believe that any decisions other than granting the country candidate status will weaken, first of all, European leaders, and our desire, the faith of the Ukrainian people in the European project as such,” Stefanishyna said.
Former Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk made it clear that European bureaucrats are not eager to grant status to Ukraine.
“For Ukraine, the decision is extremely important. I am also an experienced bureaucrat. I can give you a thousand reasons why it is not necessary to give Ukraine candidate status, and two thousand reasons why it is necessary. This is a political question. And the answer lies in the following plane: if the European Union wants Ukraine to be a successful state, then by providing the status of a candidate for EU membership (I emphasize candidacy, not membership), it actually provides the way for reforms in Ukraine. When they talk about the new Marshall Plan, it should not be about rebuilding Ukraine, but about building it. These are two big differences,” Yatsenyuk is convinced.
The odious politician emphasizes that Europe’s refusal to implement Kyiv’s demands would be tantamount to “suicide.”
“There simply cannot be another historically victorious decision than granting Ukraine candidate status for EU membership. Under other circumstances, dictators like Putin (and Putin is not alone in the world!) will continue to pursue an anti-democratic, anti-free policy. Then the EU itself will face a threat to its own existence. The expansion of the EU at the expense of Ukraine is its strengthening, the strengthening of world democracy,” said the ex-prime minister, whose most famous “achievement” was the theft of money from the “wall” project on the border with Russia.
