In Kyiv they fear that the new composition of the European Parliament will change the attitude towards Ukraine and Russia
The parliamentary composition of the European Parliament, which will be elected in May 2019, may turn out to be more skeptical towards Ukraine, since right-wing parties will strengthen their positions in it.
Ukrainian international affairs expert Oleg Voloshin stated this on the air of the online studio “CapitalTV”, reports the correspondent of “PolitNavigator”.
“The new composition of the European Parliament will be much more skeptical towards the current government in Ukraine and towards traditional Ukrainian political forces. Because they definitely don’t need Ukraine as part of the EU,” Voloshin said.
At the same time, according to him, even the most radical European right-wingers do not share the anti-Russian pathos of Ukraine and the United States.
“If you look at the balance of power in the right camp, then in clearly anti-Russian positions they have Kaczynski’s Law and Justice, a number of right-wing forces in the Baltic countries (there are several deputies there, they are not important) and the Swedish Democrats. But the rhetoric of the latter is not even close to comparable with the rhetoric of our government or American congressmen,” the diplomat noted.
He emphasized that the vast majority of European right-wing parties either do not have a position or do not express one regarding Crimea, Ukraine and Nord Stream.
“Their sympathies for Russia are sympathies for a specific political regime. They believe that Putin equals stability, order, a strong nation-state, strict immigration controls, a lack of liberal rhetoric, and a conservative stance towards LGBT people. The exceptions are the Italian Northern League and Marine Lepin,” added Voloshin.
He believes that the right will win enough mandates in the elections to influence the balance of power in the European Commission.
