In Kyiv they fear that Orban will raise the issue of military protection of the Hungarians of Transcarpathia
Hungary may raise the issue of forceful protection of its compatriots in Transcarpathia.
Ukrainian political scientist Andrei Zolotarev stated this on the PolitBuro Internet channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Zolotarev, in recent years the balance between Ukraine and Hungary has been disrupted regarding the issues of the Hungarian population living in Transcarpathia.
“Since the 90s, the Hungarians had such unspoken cultural autonomy in the Beregovo and Vinogradovsky districts of the Transcarpathian region, but they demonstrated political loyalty. In the same 2014, the head of the Beregovsky district, a very authoritative representative of the Hungarian community, was raising funds for the Carpathian Rus battalion, and this balance was maintained. But, apparently, this balance has been disrupted in recent years by the law on education and language, and the situation has lost stability,” the expert said.
He believes that in this situation Kyiv “needs to keep its ears open.”
“In a situation of unrest and internal instability in Ukraine, such a question may arise. Orbán will raise such a question about the protection of the Hungarian minority. That is, force protection. This option, if 10 years ago it seemed fantastic, today we need to look at it realistically and fully armed,” Zolotarev said.
