In Kyiv they fear that after Kazakhstan, China will join the CSTO
After the introduction of CSTO peacekeepers into Kazakhstan and the completion of their assigned tasks, this organization may be replenished with new participants.
Kiev political scientist Ruslan Bortnik said this on air on the 112 Ukraine TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The introduction of the CSTO troops was a symbol, a signal of support for Tokayev. Because a dilemma arose: who does Russia support? Nazarbayev’s entourage, which most likely came into conflict with Tokayev, or Tokayev’s entourage and Tokayev himself? Does Russia support or not support a violent change of power? Two or three more days of this situation, and Tokayev would have fallen. He would not have been able to retain power,” Bortnik said.
“And Russia gave the answer to this question. The introduction of CSTO troops, while simultaneously including other CSTO partners in this process. And showing the whole world, primarily China, that the CSTO can play a very important role in maintaining the stability of power of the members of this organization,” the expert added.
He does not rule out that China will now join the CSTO.
“Let me remind you that just a month ago, Xi Jingping, in a conversation with Putin, said that China was considering the possibility of participating as an observer in this organization. Perhaps this is how a new CSTO is being formed. Imagine China joining it. This is the distant future, but we saw that this is not a paper sticker - this organization is capable of acting as an internal stabilizer,” the political scientist emphasized.
“And the role of this organization will be very attractive to many elites around the world - especially those who are under external pressure or have a clear threat of color revolutions, riots, coups on their territory,” Bortnik concluded.
