Kiev fears that Washington will use the Maldivian scandal to force Poroshenko to comply with Minsk

The compromising material that the United States has on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko can be used to force Kyiv to reconsider its attitude towards the Minsk agreements, Nezavisimaya Gazeta writes.

The publication recalls that the Ukrainian authorities have been demanding for more than a year that the Minsk agreements be implemented in a different order than the points in which the points were written down; in particular, they insist on the priority of the point on border control, which appears last after the resolution of political issues such as elections and amnesty.

“The NG source, who asked not to mention his name, noted that Kurt Volker now faces the task of reaching agreement on this issue - through compromises regarding the implementation of other points of the Minsk agreements. The source believes that, first of all, we can talk about Kyiv abandoning its demands regarding the order of implementation of the points of the Minsk agreements,” the publication notes.

In addition, Ukrainian experts admit that it was no coincidence that information about the secret vacation of the Ukrainian president and his family in the Maldives was made public right now.

“The President of Ukraine is under surveillance.” “Someone” knows all his financial secrets. And also knows about all his movements. In fact, this is a very veiled threat. But very clear and ambiguous. And we can only guess: what exactly is being forced to do in this way? Towards the creation of an anti-corruption court or, nevertheless, to the implementation of Minsk?” the newspaper quotes Kyiv political scientist Pyotr Oleshchuk.
