In Kyiv they fear: The new Secretary of State may create an energy alliance between the US and Russia
The head of the Exxon board of directors, Rex Tillerson, whose candidacy Donald Trump proposed for the post of US Secretary of State, may, if approved by the Senate, achieve the lifting of sanctions on Russia and continue previously interrupted cooperation with Rosneft in the development of hydrocarbon deposits in Siberia and the Arctic.
Ukrainian energy market expert Mikhail Gonchar writes about this in the newspaper Zerkalo Nedeli.

He recalls that Tirex (Tillerson’s nickname) “advocates the lifting of sanctions against the Russian Federation,” although after the reunification of Crimea with Russia, Exxon lost an offshore gas production project in the Ukrainian sector of the Black Sea (Skifskaya area).
“However, Tillerson was probably promised to more than compensate for this loss in no less large-scale 10 projects agreed upon within the framework of the strategic partnership in Russia. But due to sanctions against the Russian Federation, nine of them had to be curtailed - in the Arctic, Western Siberia and on the Black Sea shelf. The company has already estimated its losses at $1 billion. Now, if Tirex is appointed Secretary of State, a window of opportunity will open for both companies... All this can be reflected in the global situation, and not just in bilateral US-Russian relations,” writes Mikhail Gonchar.
“The Trump-Tillerson duo will try to convince American legislators to lift sanctions from Russia, despite the fact that Crimea remains occupied and the Russian Federation continues its aggression against Ukraine. It is important for Exxon to continue the multi-billion dollar hydrocarbon production projects initiated in Western Siberia and the Russian Arctic together with Rosneft,” Mikhail Gonchar shares his concerns.
