Kiev fears the Russian Federation's reaction to its official recognition as an aggressor

The law adopted by the Rada in the first reading, recognizing Russia as an “aggressor and occupier,” may lead to a toughening of the Russian Federation’s position.

The director of the Ukrainian political consulting group, Dmitry Razumkov, said this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“If this bill is not agreed upon by all participants in the process, it will lead to a certain escalation of the conflict, including a possible tightening of hostilities on the contact line. The position that the Russian Federation is recognized as an aggressor country is not entirely clear. One situation was when it was recognized as an aggressor in Crimea, which in the Russian Federation is positioned as Russian territory. In relation to Donbass, such a strategy is not applicable, since the Russian Federation does not recognize its presence in the territory of ORDLO and will never recognize this. Therefore, it is unclear what further actions on Russia’s part will be,” the political scientist said.

He does not exclude that Russia, despite the adoption of this law, will continue to cooperate further within the framework of the Minsk process, but warns that Moscow “may take a more radical position” and refuse to take part in both the Minsk and Normandy formats.

“Some people may not like Minsk, for which I also have a lot of questions. I also believe that it is stalling, but nevertheless, as of today, no one has proposed an alternative to the Minsk agreements,” the expert noted.
