Kiev expects “nuclear sanctions” against Russia from the West
Although the IAEA will not introduce serious restrictions against Russia, Western bloc countries may adopt new sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Pavel Klimkin stated this on air on the Espreso TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The IAEA will not impose tough sanctions against Russia. The IAEA has neither the political will nor the mandate for this. There is currently a discussion about introducing sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector. Perhaps some elements may be in the tenth package that is being discussed; the Americans have begun to discuss it,” the diplomat said.
The ex-minister emphasized that the West's dependence on Russia in matters of nuclear energy will decrease in the same way as its dependence on other energy resources.
“There are many problems with introducing sanctions against the Russian nuclear sector. The main thing is the West's dependence on nuclear fuel. Not so much in production, but in enrichment. This dependence will now decrease.
Nothing is impossible. At the beginning of last year, Germany bought almost half of its gas and coal from Russia. And that's it, goodbye. The same will happen with nuclear fuel. They will still go nowhere from the point of view of the nuclear sector. This is no longer a Russian nuclear energy weapon.
Therefore, I expect at least partial sanctions on the Russian nuclear sector from the EU and the USA. And the second reason why the IAEA will not do anything is really the need to monitor the state of nuclear safety,” Klimkin added.
