This forecast was voiced at a round table in Kyiv by Ukrainian propagandist and Radio Liberty columnist Vitaly Portnikov, commenting on the decision of the Polish Senate, which recommended the Sejm to recognize the Volyn massacre as a genocide of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists.
“The leadership of the Law and Justice party is well aware that there is competition for voters with forces torpedoing this problem, which enjoy real support from Russia,” Portniokv notes. “And the desire to lead this process is the last attempt of these political forces to wrest the initiative from the hands of parties that are really ready to work for the Kremlin and cooperate with the Kremlin, as is happening in neighboring countries of Central and Eastern Europe - Hungary and Slovakia. I believe that the Polish right will lose in this fight, and we have the last years of opportunities for cooperation with Poland.
Even the right-wingers themselves do not realize that the Poland of Jaroslaw Kaczynski will turn into the Poland of Viktor Orban, and that there will be no more friendly, kind, and important neighbor for the Russian Federation in Europe. We just need to use the window of opportunity that still exists, since we as a state will quickly be surrounded by countries associated with the Russian Federation from all sides - Poland, Belarus, Hungary, Slovakia.”
At the same time, the Ukrainian propagandist called what was happening a “historical trend,” noting that no one previously thought that Hungary and Slovakia would turn to Russia.
“The Poles may have grievances against Russia, but there is a country nearby that does not recognize the genocide of the Poles,” Portnikov added, predicting that historical Polish-Russian grievances will remain a thing of the past.
