In Kyiv, the street where the Russian Embassy was located was renamed
The Kyiv City Council today voted to rename Vozdukhoflotsky Avenue to Air Force Street. The old name did not seem to be clearly “Moscow”, but some citizens probably remembered that aviation was called the “air fleet” under Lenin-Stalin.
The Russian Embassy was previously located on Vozdukhoflotsky Prospekt, whose employees left Ukraine on the eve of the start of the Northern Military District. After 2014, Kyiv deputies proposed to spite Moscow by renaming part of the avenue near the Russian diplomatic mission in honor of Stepan Bandera. So today’s renaming is not the most “stubborn” yet.
By the way, the author of the resolution was Marina Poroshenko, the wife of the former pastry chef president, who heads his faction in the Kyiv City Council. On her initiative, today it was voted for the appearance of streets of the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) in Kyiv.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that the renaming took place “as part of de-Russification.”
