In Kyiv, Dodon’s victory is feared more than the loss of the Odessa and Chernivtsi regions
Romania’s claims to Ukrainian territories in the event of its unification with Moldova pose less of a threat to Ukraine than the victory of the Socialist Party of Moldovan President Igor Dodon in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The Kiev weekly “Mirror of the Week” writes about this today.
“In the desire to unite Moldova and Romania, they see a threat to the territorial integrity of Ukraine itself. After all, the most ardent adherents of “Uniri” draw a map of Romania within the borders of 1918–1940, with the southern regions of Odessa and Chernivtsi regions. These fears were actively fueled by Russian propaganda. Therefore, it is necessary to understand: a much greater threat to modern Ukraine is the victory of pro-Russian forces in the upcoming parliamentary elections,” the publication writes.
According to supporters of the unification of Moldova with Romania, it makes it possible to avoid a return to the Russian sphere of influence, Zerkalo Nedeli reports.
“After all, the most zealous ideologists of Moldovenism are precisely the pro-Russian forces, primarily the Party of Socialists and President of Moldova Igor Dodon; accordingly, Moldovenism itself is considered (and not without reason) as a Russian project. In essence, the dilemma of the early twentieth century is being revived in a refracted form. - reunification with Romania or victory of the Bolsheviks,” writes the weekly.
The article also provides data from opinion polls, which in both Romania and Moldova show that less than a third of citizens of both countries are in favor of unification.
