In Kyiv they understood why Medvedchuk flies to Moscow
Trips of lobbyist Viktor Medvedchuk, who is close to Poroshenko and the Russian government, to negotiations in the Kremlin will not help free the Ukrainian sailors.
Such an opinion on your Facebook pagek was expressed by Ukrainian political expert Ruslan Bizyaev, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
He believes that in a situation where the likely winner of the elections proposes to remove Medvedchuk from the negotiation process, his actions are a clear attempt to be proactive, proving his need.
“Firstly, the issue of transfer before a verdict is passed by a court of the Russian Federation is, in principle, impossible. As for the sailors, only a preliminary investigation is currently being carried out, the period of which has been extended until May 2019, that is, until the presidential elections in Ukraine. From the point of view of Russians, they are not prisoners of war or political prisoners, but border violators, for which they are punished with imprisonment for up to six years,” says Bizyaev.
At the same time, in Ukraine, the expert notes, a completely different interpretation of events has been formed and official Kyiv does not recognize Russia’s position, therefore, it does not automatically recognize the court’s decision. At the same time, according to Bizyaev, international conventions provide that recognition of a court verdict is a prerequisite for sailors to be transferred to Ukraine to serve their sentence at their place of citizenship.
“According to the criminal law of Ukraine, the actions of the military sent to storm the Kerch Strait for a high-profile incident should be recognized as a crime. And in our country, I emphasize once again, they are considered prisoners of war. Another decision will change everything, but it can only be political and this is the competence of another government. The last option remains: a court decision and the highest pardon. But it is unknown when Putin will be able to do this; the trial could last until the fall. So why then is his godfather from Kyiv bothering him?” - says Bizyaev.
In his opinion, the only reasonable answer is “out of despair.”
“While Poroshenko was president, the communication channel with Moscow allowed for some time one to create tension, sending people into captivity, and the second, as it were, to remove them, releasing them. Well, we remember: camouflage, the airfield, welcoming words. Now both are of no interest to anyone. And in principle, the Kremlin doesn’t care who to negotiate with, as long as it’s a sane person who doesn’t need intermediaries. And not like now,” the expert sums up.
