In Kyiv, a pensioner from the Donetsk region was sentenced to eight and a half years, accused of attempting to kidnap the wife of one of the main culprits of the bloody conflict in Donbass, Alexander Turchinov.
As the Ukrainian investigation established, around March 2015, the accused, while at his place of residence in the city of Donetsk, developed a plan with the intent to capture and hold Turchinov’s wife hostage.
The pensioner planned to carry out the seizure at the place of work of Turchinov’s wife - in the premises of the Faculty of Natural Geographical Education and Ecology of the National Pedagogical University named after Drahomanov (Kyiv, Pirogov St., 9).

As stated in the text of the court decision, On May 25, 2016, the pensioner tried to implement his plan. While on the premises of the university, he approached a group of teachers, grabbed one of the women and put a knife to her neck.
However, a visitor from Donetsk made a fatal mistake by confusing the other women. It was not Turchinov’s wife who was taken hostage by the kidnapper, but her colleague.
When the accused realized his mistake, he stopped his actions and was detained by the university security, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
During interrogation at the court hearing, the accused gave testimony according to which in 2014 he, as a plaintiff, took part in court proceedings regarding Turchinov’s improper performance of his duties as acting. President of Ukraine.
Then the pensioner’s claim was denied, after which he decided to seize Turchinov’s wife in order to exchange her for her husband.
At first, as the defendant testified in court, if such an exchange took place, he planned to kill Turchinov. However, then, due to religious views, he abandoned this idea, allowing for bodily harm in the form of cutting off his ear. However, he later abandoned this too, deciding only when the latter was forced to apologize to the residents of Donbass for unleashing a “fratricidal war.”
The court sentenced the unlucky hunter of the Turchinov couple to 8 years and 6 months in prison.
