In Kyiv they offered to rip pennies from America for Ukraine’s nuclear-free status
The United States is not very interested in reforms in Ukraine, but it is interested in its support for the nuclear nonproliferation regime, and this should be used in negotiations with the American side.
Political scientist Nikolai Kapitonenko stated this on the NASH TV channel, the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It seems to me that betting on reforms will not bring us much gain even in dialogue with the Americans, because we are poor. This is a vicious circle: a poor country, it does not have the money to be a normal democracy, because democracy is expensive institutions, and where there is democracy and the rule of law, they do not give money.
The Americans know this from experience - they have already invested a lot of money in building something similar in Iraq and Afghanistan - it all did not work.
Perhaps the nuclear non-proliferation regime is the only thing that may still be of interest, a resource that we have in negotiations with America. This was at the beginning of Trump’s presidency, when they were thinking about how to draw up an agenda, what to talk to him about. But this needs to be used very wisely.
We cannot use this directly, we no longer have such capabilities, but slowing the proliferation of nuclear weapons has been a US strategic priority since 1945. Once it appeared, they set out to slow the spread at all costs. This is why they give security guarantees; this is why they maintain NATO today, because it is cheap.
They give security guarantees to Japan and South Korea - these are their real allies - so that they do not go nuclear. And they succeeded - today 5 percent of the states of the Earth are nuclear states, and as soon as they appeared, experts predicted that there would be 50%,” the expert argues.
