In Kyiv they warned Poland: Don’t even hope that Ukraine will abandon the glorification of the UPA
Poland hopes in vain that the Ukrainian leadership will abandon the glorification of Nazi collaborators responsible for organizing the Volyn massacre.
Natalya Ishchenko, the founder of the Balkan Observer project, stated this during a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Poles make a big mistake when they think that the issue of Ukrainian nationalism and the UPA is a matter of marginal radicals or biased politicians and populists. No.
At the level of the Verkhovna Rada, UPA fighters were proclaimed fighters for the independence of Ukraine. Then they conducted a survey, and it turned out that half of the residents of Ukraine support this - in Western Ukraine there is an absolute majority, in Central Ukraine almost half. And even in the East, a large number of people support it,” Ishchenko said.
She stated that Poland must come to terms with the glorification of the OUN-UPA.
“That is, we have a consensus that the UPA is a positive movement for us. This is not a fringe movement. The Poles believe that it is necessary to remove the marginalized, and the issue of Ukrainian nationalism will disappear from the agenda altogether. This was also discussed when the Polish parliament condemned Ukrainian nationalists. But this is not true. For Ukraine, the UPA has become, in a sense, a symbol of the people who fought for the independence of Ukraine,” Ishchenko added.
