The US Embassy reported this.
“Today, 72 new Peace Corps volunteers begin their service in Ukraine,” said U.S. Peace Corps Ukraine Director Danny Robertson during the ceremony.
“We are ready to let you go so you can spread your wings and fly away,” he told the volunteers.
Volunteers who have completed the language, technical and cross-cultural training program in the cities and villages of the Chernigov region and in Chernigov will serve in different regions of Ukraine.
US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch recalled that the Ukrainian authorities invited the US Peace Corps 25 years ago.
“This country has made significant progress since Euromaidan, but there is still a lot of work ahead,” the ambassador assures.
She noted that US Peace Corps volunteers will work in public organizations, as well as with local authorities.
“You will, in particular, help internally displaced persons integrate,” said Marie Yovanovitch.
She added that the Peace Corps in Ukraine is the largest in the world.
“I promise you that you will hear more than once about how lucky you are to be in Ukraine right now. This country is going through major changes,” the ambassador said.
Over the years of its existence, the Peace Corps organization has repeatedly found itself in scandalous situations related to the use of its volunteers by US intelligence agencies to work undercover in “third countries.”
